About the Community and Location
The Community
Santa Catarina Palopó is a small picturesque village located on the shore of the famous and enchanting Lake Atitlán in Sololá Guatemala. The community is entirely made up of Mayans who speak the Kaqchikel language. Here everyday life is contrasted between ancient traditions and the influence of new technology. The women of the village still weave their native blue clothing on a back-strap loom while the men of the village split firewood for cooking. Many people here still consult with shamans who continue to use the ancient Mayan calendars in their enactment of spiritual traditions. The majority of food here is prepared over a fire and the tortillas are still made by hand on the comal.
